It'll be an edgy comedy apparently

Brett Ratner will produce a new twist on the Snow White story, which we're told will be an edgy comedy rather than the traditional fairytale we all know and love. There's no word yet on whether Chris Tucker will play the evil Queen, but it will be in 3D. Of course.

The script's been written by Melisa Wallack, also behind The Dallas Buyer's Club and 2007's Bill, and goes back to the Brothers Grimm version of the fairytale in some respects to add a less-than-legal element, and some big scary beasties.

Ratner told Deadline, "This is not your grandfather's Snow White," Ratner said. "Melisa went back to the 500 year old folk tale and put in some of the things that were missing from Walt Disney's film. His dwarves were miners, and here they are robbers. There is also a dragon that was in the original folk tale. Walt made one of the great movies of all time, but ours is edgy and there is more comedy. The original, made for its time, was soft compared to what we're going to do."

That aside, we're not sure how this will be edgy, but no doubt all will become clear. Ratner isn't necessarily set to direct, as yet, and if what he told us about starting Tower Heist this autumn is true, he's unlikely to take the reins.

This does, however, confirm that fairy tales are where it's at. With new twists on Cinderella, Oz and Maleficent all planned, and even something like Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch boasting lots of fairytale elements, it's a really good time to be an orphaned princess / seventh son of a cobbler.
