Guess what, folks? The first half of the final Twilight outing, Breaking Dawn, came out this weekend in the US as well as over here. And you’ll be no doubt shocked to learn that the Twihards turned out in their droves, along with those tempted by the thought of either kinky vampire naughtiness (which is lacking) or weird vampire pregnancy issues (yeuch). But even though the movie didn’t quite beat the franchise’s record New Moon launch, it still dragged in a healthy $139.5 million from American ticket buyers according to studio estimates.
Penguin ‘toon sequel Happy Feet Two didn’t fare quite as well, opening well short of the first film with $22 million (compared to the original’s $41.5 million). Still, there’s a chance it could dance into more hearts over this Thanksgiving holiday week/weekend, even if it does face serious competition from the likes of Hugo, The Muppets and Arthur Christmas.
Immortals was down to third with $12.2 million, while Adam Sandler’s comedy Jack And Jill went tumbling down the charts a couple of places to fourth and $12 million. Puss In Boots fell to fifth with $10.7 million.
**Tower Heist collapsed down to sixth place, taking $7 million and J Edgar rustled up $5.9 million for seventh. At eighth, A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christma****s added $2.9 million to its pot, and in ninth, In Time ticked away $1.6 million. Sneaking into the top 10 on its first weekend despite only appearing in 29 – yes, 29 cinemas – was Alexander Payne’s long-awaited next film The Descendants, starring George Clooney. With Oscar buzz circling, it’s off to a healthy start at the box office…
