Since impressing us with Shattered Glass and then writing the script for Flightplan, writer-director Billy Ray has been a busy man.

He already has Cold War thriller Breach in the editing room, but now he’s taking on the daunting task of directing a film that follows the true story of an American football team comprised of displaced students in the aftermath of the New Orleans Katrina disaster.

As previously announced, Universal’s Hurricane Season is based on the upcoming documentary called Walking On Dead Fish, which chronicles how the team at East St John High School dealt with integrating students from surrounding teams and tried to help restore their community while also forming a winning line-up.

"It's about something that I love, which is this idea of what sports can do to a community," Ray told The Hollywood Reporter. "In this case, it's a team that came together to both literally and figuratively rebuild the city around it. I find that completely compelling."

He’s going to watch hours of footage edited from the documentary before also travelling down to the school and meeting players and fans before he even considers writing the script.
