Scooby Doo is top dog in the US

Suspend your disbelief for a moment because sixties-born cartoon canine Scooby Doo stormed screens over the weekend, opening to a shocking $56.4 million in the US. Coming in second was Matt Damon's amnesiac thriller The Bourne Identity with $27.5 million, followed by a disappointing $14.5 million bow for Nic Cage's Windtalkers. Shaggy, Velma, Daphne, Fred and of course the mutt himself, put on a phenomenal show despite a critical beating that would have left a lesser property begging for mercy. Scooby Doo's stellar performance has largely been attributed to its appeal for younger audiences. So you see, they would never have got away with it if it hadn't been for those pesky kids.
