Ben Affleck Joining The Justice League?

UPDATE: Deadline has already knocked this one on the head. According to their version of events, while Affleck was indeed offered the Justice League gig and shown the script, he and his camp have turned it down. That's the second time this week that Deadline has completely undermined a story from Variety. Fight!

Slipping into Daredevil's tight costume didn't go so well for him ten years ago,* but Ben Affleck may not quite be done with superheroes. Variety are reporting that Warner Bros. have Affleck in mind to direct their developing Justice League movie. He's the only potential director to have so far been sent Will Beall's screenplay.

Following The Town and the upcoming Argo, Affleck is making himself popular behind-the-camera at Warners. He has also, to date, often appeared in the films he's directed, leading to speculation that he might don one of the JLA's capes himself.

There's no guarantee that he'll accept the gig, since he's also very keen on filming a multi-part adaptation of Stephen King's horror doorstop **The Stand. That would be an equally huge undertaking to The Justice League, so it seems unlikely that Affleck could do both, unless one was significantly back-burnered.

Warners' plans for The Justice League are still unclear, but accordingly to relatively recent intel, it seems that they're planning a stand-alone project, rather than taking taking the Marvel route of consolidating its existing hero roster. Man Of Steel director Zack Snyder said last year that his and Henry Cavill's version of Superman would not play any part in a JLA movie.

"What I'm doing with Superman is like what Chris Nolan did with Batman," quoth Snyder, "and what they'll do with Justice League will be its own thing, with its own Batman and its own Superman. We'll be over here with our movie, and they'll kinda get to do it twice, which is kinda cool..."

Still more questions than answers then, but we will, of course, keep you informed.

*Although his turn as George "Superman" Reeves in Hollywoodland is great.
