Edge of Darkness heads to Hollywood

Steven Soderbergh managed to turn a Channel Four miniseries into a multi-Oscar-winning film and British director Martin Campbell has now cottoned on to the idea. Having just signed a deal to remake his BBC series Edge of Darkness as a feature film, the Mask of Zorro and GoldenEye director will take his own stab at bringing British telly over to Hollywood. Campbell, who is currently finishing off Beyond Borders with Angelina Jolie, shot the series in 1986 as a political thriller about a police officer who gets drawn into the underside of 80s Britain's nuclear industry while investigating the death of his activist daughter. The feature remake will, however, adapt the story, bringing it up to date and moving it across the Atlantic to the US. Campbell's Thatcher-era CV also includes episodes of Minder. So, if Edge of Darkness works out, we could see Arthur Daley, sheepskin and all, peddling his wares on Sunset Boulevard before long. Stranger things have happened.
