They call it puppet love...

The first trailer for Jodie Foster’s new film, The Beaver, starring Mel Gibson, has now gone online over at Apple.

You remember the one? We might have talked about it once or twice. Gibson stars as Walter Black, a man in the middle of a serious depression. Once a devoted family man and corporate leader, he’s now a loner, detached from his wife (Foster) and children (Anton Yelchin and Riley Thomas Stewart) and desperate for something – anything – that can help him climb back out again.

And then he finds a beaver puppet in a dumpster and that allows him a whole new lease on life, since he can put a little distance between himself and the world that troubles him so much.

This is the first actual footage we’ve seen of the film, and it’s nice to note that alongside the obvious comedy mileage of the former Martin Riggs walking around with a soft toy on his arm, there’s also a throbbing heart here, a sad tale of a man who has lost everything and is desperate to get it back, even if that means allowing himself to look foolish.

There’s no set release date either here or in the US, though Summit Entertainment did announce yesterday that it’s targeting spring 2011 for across the pond, so maybe we won’t have to wait that long to see the whole thing.
