Alan Ball, the writer behind director Sam Mendes' hugely acclaimed American Beauty, has won best original screenplay in the Writers Guild of America awards. It's Ball's second prize for the film - his big screen debut - as he got a Golden Globe earlier in the year and is also in line for an Oscar. At Sunday's Los Angeles ceremony Ball beat out Being John Malkovich writer Charlie Kaufman, Magnolia's Paul Thomas Anderson, The Sixth Sense's M. Night Shyamalan's and Three Kings' David O Russell.
