Baz Luhrmann is known for his high-energy cinematic output, a product of his equally peppy directing style. But after getting a head injury for Christmas on the set of his latest, The Great Gatsby, the filmmaker might want to consider watching where he walks in future.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald (via The Hollywood Reporter), Luhrmann hurt himself while working on a small chunk of the shoot. “We were on quite a cramped set and he was ducking under the crane," he says. "He struck his head on the weights on the end of the camera crane. He split open his head, and we had to get the doctor," co-producer/music supervisor Anton Monsted apparently told the Herald.
With three stitches in place and Luhrmann otherwise fine, the injury delivered a small Christmas present to the cast and crew, with the film shutting down a day early for the holiday break. They’ll pick up the remaining shots when the cameras crank once more in January.
That group, of course, includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Isla Fisher, Jason Clarke and Elizabeth Debicki in a new version of F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel. The film is scheduled to arrive a year from now in the US, though there’s no set date for the UK yet.
