Avengers Rules The US Box Office

It’s already been doing rather well over here and across the other countries where the film is now on release, but this weekend was The Avengers’ chance to prove itself in Marvel’s home territory. And the result? Yeah, it did okay. As in box office record-shattering, barnstorming, studio-estimated $207.4m okay….

The Avengers is now the top dog in the American box office all-time opening weekend charts, shattering the previous record set by Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2. Worldwide, the film has now pushed past $650 million. That billion-dollar box office looks like a ridiculously easy target now, especially as Joss Whedon’s film still has to launch in Japan. Heck, it’ll have easily blow past that by the time we finish writing this sentence.

As you might expect, no other studio was silly enough to put a wide release up against the behemoth, so the rest of the chart is comprised of returning players. Think Like A Man continues to do impressive business, adding $8 million in second place for a $73 million total so far after three weeks in release. The Hunger Games held on to third for $5.7 million while The Lucky One clung to fourth and $5.5 million. In fifth place, what America-land calls The Pirates! Band Of Misfits took in $5.4 million for an $18.5 million US total to date.

The Five-Year Engagement sank one place to sixth with $5.1 million, while The Raven dug its talons in to seventh and $2.5 million. Safe fell to eighth and $2.4 million, while Chimpanzee was down one to ninth with $2.3 million. And in 10th place we find The Three Stooges, which made $1.8 million.

We may not be able to save the charts, but with the help of Box Office Mojo, you can be damn sure we’ll avenge them.
