You might think that the third weekend after a big release would be safe territory to release a new film looking to snatch the top spot at the American box office, but the reigning champ isn't usually something on the level of Avengers: Endgame, which continued to do strong business as it rounded week three. The latest MCU release notched up $63 million this weekend, according to studio estimates.

That pushes it over $723 million domestically, as it passed Infinity War and Black Panther on the list of highest-grossing US releases. Avatar is next in its sights on that last. Worldwide, the movie has crossed $2.48 billion.

Still, the week's top new arrival, Pokemon: Detective Pikachu had no reason to be sad, as it opened to $58 million, in line with expectations, and scoring the best launch for a movie based on a video game property. The Hustle had to make do with a third place slot, nabbing $13.5 million.

The Intruder slipped to fourth, earning $6.6 million, while Long Shot was pushed to fifth, adding $6.1 million.

New comedy Poms landed in sixth, making $5.1 million, ahead of Uglydolls, which fell from fourth to seventh on $3.9 million. Breakthrough made $2.4 million at eighth and Tolkien, opening on 1,495 screens, entered the top 10 in ninth. The biopic chronicling the younger days of the Lord Of The Rings writer took home $2.1 million. And finally, in 10th, Captain Marvel prepared to leave the top 10, finding $1.8 million in its 10th week.
