Sigourney Weaver in Avatar

As if we hadn't been waiting long enough for the sequel – or rather, sequels, given James Cameron's expansive plans – to Avatar, the current world crisis threatens to throw another spanner into the works. But at least there are new images to share, including this one of Sigourney Weaver as Dr. Grace Augustine on set alongside Joel David Moore (Norm) and producer Jon Landau.

Tweeted out by the movies' official twitter account, it comes from Landau's Instagram and is interesting in that it shows Weaver as her character, who (spoiler alert for an 11-year-old film) died in the original. So does this represent a flashback? Or has technology found some way to resurrect her as a human avatar?

We'll find out when the first of four planned sequels arrives, hopefully still in December 2021. Cameron has said that the bulk of filming for this new film was complete before production had to shut down, and post-production is something that can continue with teams working separately. Of course, the swathe of release date shifts might impact its slot, but fingers crossed it still makes it to our screens.
