Adapted by Garland from Jeff VanderMeer's book. Annihilation chronicles an expedition into a mysterious, remote and sealed-off zone known as Area X. For 30 years, Area X has been labelled by the government as an environmental disaster zone, despite all appearances to the contrary. And for all that time, a secret agency called the Southern Reach has monitored Area X and sent in expeditions beyond the border known as "The Shimmer" to try to discover the truth. Some expeditions have suffered terrible consequences, and few have ever come back out.
When Portman's military veteran biologist discovers that her husband (Oscar Isaac) has returned from the area with a dire illness, she heads into it to find some answers.
The likes of Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez and Tessa Thompson also feature in the cast of the film, which arrives both here and in the States on 23 February, before hitting Netflix in the UK a couple of weeks later.
