Tobey Maguire is developing a serious taste for swinging around major world cities while dealing with n'er-do-wells and generally getting the girl. Next stop is Tokyo, with long-germinatingproject Tokyo Suckerpunch gettting a burst of impetus and a co-star to boot in the shapely form of Anne Hathaway.
According to Ed Solomon, who is adapting Isaac Adamson's novel and also has Men In Black and Charlie's Angels on his resume, Hathaway will play the editor of Maguire's writer, Billy Chaka, who eventually falls for his literary charms. "Billy is a graphic novelist who lives in Cleveland and writes a graphic novel about himself that he sets in Tokyo. He has a certain fantasia of what Japan is and has a certain fantasia of what a real woman is."
Chaka travels to Japan to try to meet his ideal woman, but finds her a lot closer to home. "It's a romantic comedy," Solomon continues, "it's got a lot of action, but it's mostly comedy set in Tokyo, about a guy who thinks he's in love with one woman."
It's unclear how much actual suckerpunching Maguire will be called on to do, but if the adaptation is even vaguely in keeping with Adamson's book, expect martial arts madness galore.
Solomon didn't reveal the timelines for production, but with Spider-Man 4 imminent, we'd imagine it will have to wait until next year. Gary Ross, who worked with Maguire on Seabiscuit and Pleasantville, is attached to direct.
