Brokeback Mountain moved further out in front in the Oscar race on Saturday night as Ang Lee took the top prize at the Director's Guild of America awards.

The award was presented by Ron Howard, who Lee had presented with the same award in 2002, and Lee said that, "This is the only award I put on my desk". Lee beat Steven Spielberg, Paul Haggis, George Clooney and Bennet Miller to take the prize for a second time, only the 11th director ever to do so. Spielberg is the only director ever to win it three times.

In the Documentary category, Werner Herzog took the top prize for Grizzly Man, while the TV drama series prize went to Michael Apted for Rome and the TV comedy prize to MIchael Buckland for the pilot of My Name Is Earl. The TV movie prize was tied between Joseph Sargent for Warm Springs and George C. Wolfe for Lackawanna Blues.
