Ang Lee is swapping sexually frustrated cowboys for sexually charged World War Two-era spy action.
The man behind Brokeback Mountain has decided to follow his Oscar-scooping turn with Lust, Caution, based on Eileen Chang’s short story.
Little is known about the plot beyond the fact it’s an espionage thriller set in urban 1940’s Shanghai. But what we do know isn’t much of a surprise – it’ll reunite Lee with long-time producer James Schamus and be handled by Focus Features, the Universal distribution arm that scaled the Mountain.
With a Chinese-language script, it’s clear that Ang has lost none of his need to keep shifting genres. "Ang is going to be making a very exciting film that's unlike anything he's done before," Schamus gushed to the Hollywood Reporter at Cannes. "Lust, Caution is a uniquely Asian story which, in Ang's hands, will surprise and attract audiences around the world."
