After he launched the Shrek franchise for DreamWorks, directing the first two outings and helping out with the others, Andrew Adamson moved on to specialise in big live-action films, including two Narnia entries. But though he’s currently making Mister Pip with Hugh Laurie, he hasn’t completely left his animated past behind. He not only consults on other DreamWorks films, but he’s also started picking up new projects,including his latest, an adaptation of Dark Horse Comics’ title Beasts of Burden.
Created Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson, Beasts finds the community of Burden Hill troubled by supernatural events. It falls to a gang of the town’s dogs (and a cat) to team up in order to keep their owners and everyone else safe. Cats and dogs working together? One step away from them living together and then mass hysteria, surely!
The story was launched in The Dark Horse Book of Hauntings, Witchcraft, the Dead and Monsters, and scored the creators an Eisner award. Adamson is working with indie production company Reel FX, which nabbed the rights and intends to make a CG ‘toon from the story. There’s no word on whether Adamson will direct, though it’s more likely he’ll just help guide the eventual movie through the dark forests of development.
