The story as so far published involves an ecological event that creates giant creatures that lay waste to all and sundry. Civilisation collapses and humankind finds itself no longer ruling the planet, and our focus is Ellen Grace, a survivor on a mission to round up and rescue lost children.
The original one-shot, written by Tim Daniel with art by Mehdi Cheggour, was published by Image Comics. It's about to become an ongoing series at 21 Ink Publishing however, beginning next year.
That expansion is where Ovredal comes in, since to complement the new comics, he and his producer partners Adrian Askarieh (Hitman) and Scott Kinney are aiming at a multimedia onslaught encompassing film, TV and webisodes. Ovredal seems intent on directing all of it.
The vibe the team is going for seems to be a kind of Cloverfield-Meets-The-Walking-Dead. Given the foundering of Ron Howard's similarly ambitious plans for The Dark Tower, the Enormous concept might seem like serious overreaching. Bear in mind though that Ovredal brought in Trollhunter for less than a million dollars. If he can continue working to that scale on that sort of budget, there's every chance he can actually pull this off.
Enormous doesn't yet have a home on any platform though, so there's a way to go yet. We'll keep you posted.
