Amy Adams in Arrival

The teaser that arrived last week ended with the promise of the full trailer for new sci-fi drama Arrival and so the day has now, er, arrived. See Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker deal with the appearance of an alien species in not one, but two versions of the footage.

Arrival, from Sicario director Denis Villeneuve, charts what happens when mysterious alien ships that become commonly known as "shells" show up around the world. Humanity is naturally conflicted about how to deal with the utterly unknown and seemingly unknowable creatures that dwell within – the legacy of decades of paranoid sci-fi thrillers and the usual nationalistic needs – but the US government contacts linguist Louise Banks (Adams) as she might have some clue how to decipher the new arrivals' strange language.

Packed off with physicist Ian Donnelly (Renner) and Army Colonel Weber (Whitaker), it's her job to figure out what the aliens want and where they've come from... Lights Out writer Eric Heisserer adapted Ted Chiang's 1998 novella Story Of Your Life for this one, which is giving us a lot of positive, Twilight Zone-style vibes, especially in the way it appears to be saying more about humanity than the aliens in our reactions. Arrival hits UK cinemas on November 11.
