The first trailer for George Clooney's latest drama, The American has arrived online over at Yahoo.

Directed by Anton Corbijn, who made the excellent Ian Curtis music biopic Control, it’s the tale of Jack (Clooney), a skilled assassin who decides that, after a bad end to a job in Sweden, he’s had enough of killing people and wants to live a quiet life.

When his contact, Larry (Bruce Altman), assures him that his next assignment can be his last and Jack heads to a sleepy Italian town to begin planning the operation. There, he strikes up a friendship with a local priest and a relationship with a woman. But his past is soon catching up with him.

This looks to be much more of a low-key Clooney than his full-on charm mode, more Syriana than Ocean’s. But we all know that GC is comfortable in both worlds, so we’re guessing this could possibly end up in awards contention.

Check out the trailer below for yourself then decide what you think. The film is out in the UK on October 8 this year.
