Altman's Honour

Robert Altman will be receiving an Honorary Oscar at this year’s Academy Awards.

He’s been nominated five times for the Best Director gong – for M_A_S*H, Nashville, The Player, Short Cuts and Gosford Park – but has never won. Additionally, he was the producer of two of those films – Nashville and Gosford Park – which were nominated for Best Picture.

"The board was taken with Altman's innovation, his redefinition of genres, his invention of new ways of using the film medium and his reinvigoration of old ones," Academy president Sid Ganis told Variety. "He is a master filmmaker and well deserves this honour."
