Despite competition from a cult children’s book adaptation and the star appeal of Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler, Tim Burton’s take on Alice In Wonderland stayed down the rabbit hole for a third week atop the US box office, raking in an estimated $34.5 million, and pushing the film’s domestic total up to $265.8 million.

Fox, meanwhile, found some success with Diary Of A Wimpy Kid, adapted from Jeff Kinney’s books. The movie took second place with $21.8 million, ensuring that Jen and Gerry’s rom-com The Bounty Hunter, had to settle for third and $21 million. Despite some grumblings, the movie had a relatively slender $40 million budget, so it’s not an awful opening, even if it doesn’t quite make the case for either star being a massive draw.

Universal’s bad streak sadly continued with the Jude Law/Forest Whitaker-starring Repo Men flopping into fourth place with $6.2 million, just ahead of She’s Out Of My League, which dropped a reasonable amount in its second weekend, making $6 million.

**Green Zone **suffered a far heavier dip in audiences, dropping to sixth place with $5.9 million and just $24 million earned so far – not good given its expensive $100 million-plus price tag.

The rest of the top 10 was a mix of the old (Avatar, still doing healthy business while slipping down the charts) and new (Our Family Wedding, finding its niche, but not doing a lot of trade at ninth). For the full list of the top 12 and beyond, head to Box Office Mojo.
