Alexander Skarsgard, usually to be found delighting his female fans by taking his shirt off a lot and being icily sexy in True Blood, has jumped aboard Battleship.

According to the Heat Vision Blog, Skarsgard will play a straight-arrow naval officer, the older brother of Taylor Kitsch’s rebellious fellow sea-going type. Kitsch’s character apparently worships the water his sibling sails on, so we predict that they will either butt heads over the proper way to serve on the sea or Skarsgard will die horribly at the hands of the aquatic alien enemy, spurring our hero to action and vengeance. But that’s just a guess.

Peter Berg is at the helm of this one, working from a script by Jon and Erich Hoeber, who have taken the Hasbro game’s basic concept and hitched it to a story about a multi-national fleet fighting an extraterrestrial armada.

It’s not the first military role for Skarsgard: he also appeared in HBO miniseries Generation Kill.

Berg will kick off the shooting schedule this August in Hawaii, but the film itself won’t actually arrive until summer 2012.
