Shooting has already been underway on the new series of Doctor Who, with Jodie Whittaker as the latest TARDIS incumbent. And one of the people she'll meet on her travels will be played by Alan Cumming.

The actor stopped by Will Young and Christopher Sweeney's Homo Sapiens podcast (as reported by EW), and divulged his character. When asked if he'll be a baddie, Cumming replied, "Like a nice baddie. I’m James I, so I’m kind of like a dandy, foppy sort of coward who comes all right in the end. They said he might come back."

Taking the throne in 1603 after the death of Queen Elizabeth I, it sounds like he'll be causing problems for the Doctor, but won't exactly be at the level of, say, the Daleks. And we're always pleased to see him show up to sprinkle a little chaos. He might not be right about coming back, though, as he later admitted he wasn't actually supposed to reveal his role. Oops...

On the subject of Who, Cumming also took to twitter to clarify that while he's been approached before about the role of the Doctor, it never actually reached formal offer stage. So this latest casting represents the closest he'll come to the role.

The new Who will be on our screens this autumn.
