With 24: Live Another Day marking the end of 24's Jack Bauer era two years ago, the Fox Network is now forging ahead with a spin-off series. 24: Legacy will pick up the baton with an all-new cast of characters, although the key triumvirate of Howard Gordon, Manny Koto and Evan Katz will remain behind the scenes. Brian Grazer will executive produce, and while Kiefer Sutherland won't appear in front of the cameras, there's some thought that he might be "creatively involved" somehow.

Replacing Bauer as the show's focus will be Eric Carter, an African American military hero in his 20s, who returns to the US after his so-far-unspecified deployment and finds that trouble has followed him home. The female lead is a veteran former head of the show's fictional Counter Terrorist Unit. In asking the CTU to help solve his own problem, he in turn aids them in stopping a large-scale terrorist assault on the US. The show's big hook, with each episode representing an hour of a single day, will, of course, remain in place.

Coto and Katz wrote the script for the pilot episode, which ticked all the right boxes at Fox. Stephen Hopkins (Predator 2, Judgment Night), who directed half of the first series of 24 including the original pilot, will be back to kick off the new procedings too.

Nobody's been cast yet, but the new 24 ball is clearly rolling. Expect more updates in the near future.
