1917 Triumphs At The 2020 BAFTA Film Awards

1917

As awards season speeds towards its Oscar-shaped conclusion, the focus Sunday was instead right here in Blighty as the BAFTAs Film Awards ceremony garlanded various winners, including some very familiar faces from the last couple of months. 1917 was the big winner on the night, taking home seven (including Best Film and Best British Film, plus Sam Mendes as Director), ahead of Joker with three (Joaquin Phoenix once again dominating the Leading Actor category).

Also picking up another trophy? Judy's Renée Zellweger, who also seems a fair pick for Oscar glory next weekend. Parasite locked down Film Not In The English Language and Original Screenplay, while Jojo Rabbit's Taika Waititi nabbed Adapted Screenplay and brought the house down with his speech, which began thus: "Thanks very much, BAFTA. This is very, very cool for me. Coming from the colonies, we know it's been a hard week for you guys. It's very nice to take a little bit of your gold back home... Where it belongs."

The awards' lack of diversity was brought up several times, and there was even a Prince Harry gag from Brad Pitt – via Margot Robbie, who collected his Supporting Actor gong in his head – who admitted he wanted to call his award "Harry" so he could take it back to America.
