While Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker has been riding high at the top of the American box office charts for the last few weeks, it took an awards favourite with plenty of buzz and a platform release that went wide this weekend. Sam Mendes' 1917. which had been on a few screens, rocketed up the charts to snatch first position.

The film, which is set during the muddy, chaotic conflict of World War I, has been hoovering up the awards and leapt in terms of earning, nabbing $36.5 million, according to studio estimates. That was enough to overtake Skywalker, which dropped to second place on $15 million. The movie has made $478.1 million domestically and is closing in on a billion dollars worldwide, though it has slowed down.

Third was Jumanji: The Next Level, which took in $14 million, ahead of the week's first full new arrival, comedy Like A Boss, which landed fourth and earned $10 million. Rounding out the top five was legal drama Just Mercy, which added screens and also made $10 million. The final figures may see the two trade places.

Little Women was sixth, making $7.6 million, while submerged thriller Underwater seemingly couldn't swim against the tide of negative reviews and opened with $7 million. Frozen II, which has been on release for eight weeks now, slipped to eighth, adding $5.7 million, with Knives Out at ninth ($5.7 million) and Spies In Disguise falling to 10th with $5.1 million.
