Cars 3 Takes Over The Top Spot At The US Box Office

Cars 3

The Cars franchise may critically be something of a black sheep (or black sedan?) in the Pixar pantheon, but they make money for the studio. The latest, Cars 3 is off to a decent, if uninspiring start, with $60.1 million at the US box off this weekend according to studio estimates.

That was enough to secure the top spot, though it's still a little lower than the starts for both previous movies. Perhaps the better reactions to this one than the second will help it lap the franchise competition. And Wonder Woman, despite dropping to second, shows no sign of slowing down, adding $40.7 million for a current US total of $274.6 million and leaping well past the $570 million mark worldwide.

Controversial Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez On Me debuted in third with $27 million, while The Mummy fell to fourth on $13.9 million. This week's third new arrival, shark thriller 47 Meters Down was fifth with $11.5 million.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (Salazar's Revenge here) sank two places to sixth, making $8.4 million. New comedy Rough Night had a tough start, launching on $8 million in seventh.

Kids' pic Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie was eighth, taking in $7.3 million, while Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 took home $4.9 million at ninth. Finally, we have It Comes At Night, which made $2.6 million in 10th.

Opening outside the top 10 was Colin Trevorrow's The Book Of Henry, which has attracted some pretty negative reviews and landed 13th on limited release with $1.4 million.
