Primal Review

Primal

Spending so much time with the hum of a hard drive as your only friend can do strange things to the game creator’s mind… but it makes for damn inventive games. And so Primal arrives: a dark, fantasy beat-’em-up meets RPG meets LSD.

You play nominally as Jen, a human whose boyfriend is whisked away by forces from another dimension, as she fights to save her lost love with the help of a cute gargoyle whom you also control at various points during the game. Primal doesn’t make a lot of sense, but it’s beautiful to look at, with splashy colours,

a cadre of angles and sweeping camera moves, and some decent voice acting from the likes of Babylon 5’s Andreas Katsulas.

It’s also difficult enough (the control system takes some getting used to), intricate enough and gorgeous enough to keep you coming back for more.
