Family Guy: Back To The Multiverse personifies everything that is wrong with licensed games. Visually it’s horrible, the 2D charm of Seth McFarlane’s rib-tickling telly box champion lost somewhere along the way during the transition to 3D in the hands of Heavy Iron Studios, classic gags from the show are recycled completely out of context and any sliver of original writing that’s found its way into the game is guaranteed to cause offence.

Honestly, Back To The Multiverse serves neither gamer nor the die hard fan of the show, so much so it probably should never have been give the green light by MacFarlane, Fox or the suits at Activision. Taking its cue from the episode ‘Road To The Multiverse’, the game casts you as Stewie and Brian as you bounce around a series of bizarre alternate worlds filled with Amish farmers and Frat Boys in pursuit of Stewie’s evil half-brother Bertram. Unfortunately the wafer thin narrative and anorexic campaign is utterly devoid of the series’ piercing observations and trademark lewd laughs.

Combined with some utterly appalling level design, terrible physics and annoyingly imprecise aiming, Back To The Multiverse is quite possibly the single worst tie-in of this generation. Sure it’s got its moments – take a bow Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man and Ernie the Giant Chicken – and there are plenty of collectibles for loot lovers, as well as local co-op play, but none of this makes up for the fact that Heavy Iron has delivered a chronically out-dated and sloppy insult to McFarlane’s show.
