Disney Infinity: Toy Story In Space

If there’s a criticism to be made about the first batch of Play Sets released for Disney Infinity, it’s that it’s been too Pixar heavy. Cars, Monsters University and The Incredibles comprise three of the five sets released, while properties such as The Lion King and The Little Mermaid are left underrepresented by periphery items within the in-game toy box. Sadly, the Toy Story In Space set doesn’t readdress that balance but it does continue Disney Infinity’s unique brand of enjoyable bitesize entertainment.

This new world draws Buzz, Jessie and Woody (criminally sold separately) into the larger Star Command universe, with the trio protecting the Pizza Planet Alien homeworld from the nefarious Emperor Zurg. Structurally, it closely resembles The Lone Ranger set that was released at Disney Infinity’s launch, revolving around a central hub area, which houses a clutch of platforming-based missions that dispatch players across the wider sprawling world.

Oddly, the majority of the action gameplay is relegated to a ‘Combat Simulator’ arena rather than part of the main campaign. Missions focus on exploration and puzzle-solving, buoyed by a selection of entertaining new gadgets that fuel much of the enjoyment throughout the set. One of the principal hooks of Disney Infinity is the collectable items scattered across each Play Set. and in that regard this Toy Story add-on doesn’t disappoint, with jetpacks, goo guns and familiar characters and items just waiting to be discovered.

Though mission design is on the repetitive side, nevertheless there are plenty of thrills to be had for younger gamers and supervising adults. Anyone expecting a rip-roaring escapade through Zurg’s hideout a la Toy Story 2’s opening will be sorely disappointed but for everyone else Toy Story In Space makes for another delightful addition to Infinity’s expanding toy box.
