Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, along comes another pirate epic – this time a biopic of the real-life brigand and all-round bastard of the seas, Blackbeard.

Variety reports that DreamWorks is behind a project all about the life of the legendary pirate. Working from a script by David Franzoni (Amistad and Gladiator), it’ll most likely cover the busiest years of the British buccaneer - also known as Edward Teach - in which he tore around the Caribbean of the early 18th Century causing all manner of merry hell. Set in the so-called Golden Age of Piracy, DreamWorks’ new flick will obviously eschew the mystical and mythical elements of the Pirates Of The Caribbean flick and centre on the Queen Anne's Revenge commander's real-life shenanigans.

A gift of a character for anyone who dares to step into his boots, Blackbeard (to whom Jack Sparrow bears an uncanny resemblance) was described as a big feathered tricorn-wearing, multiple sword-carrying salty old sea dog who had a penchant for weaving hemp and lit matches into his enormous facial fuzz during battle.

No news yet on who will be playing the titular character yet but we’re guessing Johnny Depp is all pirated out for the foreseeable. So who do you think should portray Blackbeard?
