First Trailer For They Came Together

Though movies generally tend to release a trailer before plundering the footage store for clips, David Wain’s new romantic comedy spoof They Came Together has gone in the opposite direction. A clip was put online shortly before the film’s Sundance bow in January, and is being followed to the web by the trailer, viewable below.

They Came Together finds Wain and regular writing partner/fellow The State veteran Michael Showalter taking the meet-cute genre and giving it a swift poke with a sharp, satirical stick. They’ve also gathered a lot of the cast of** Wet Hot American Summer** for this one, which focuses small business owner Molly (Amy Poehler) and her unexpected romance with Joel (Paul Rudd). The two explain the ups, downs, lefts, rights, in, outs and shake it all abouts of their relationship, while the filmmakers take pot shots at some of the bigger clichés of the genre. In this trailer alone, we get awkward dates, weird meetings, the mixed group of friends who offer advice on a basketball court and that old standby of… someone falling through a window to their death?

We have a lot of time for this crew, especially given that the cast also features Cobie Smulders, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Michael Shannon, Christopher Meloni, Ellie Kemper, Adam Scott, Max Greenfield, Ken Marino, Melanie Lynskey, Bill Hader, Jack McBrayer and many more. US audiences will see this one on June 27, but though it recently played at Sundance London, there’s no announced UK date yet.
