Make room on your movie radar for Blue Ruin. It’s a Cannes-heralded US thriller that’s been making waves across the Pond, and those ripples have now reached our fair shores. It has a new teaser trailer that you can watch right here, right now.

Directed, written and shot by Brooklyn-based filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier, it’s a revenger that follows an enigmatic type called Dwight Evans (played by Saulnier’s boyhood pal Macon Blair) as he returns to his childhood home spoiling for blood.

The teaser is a fittingly moody, atmospheric affair. It sells the central premise – an emotionally ragged character who’s retreated to the margins of society emerges from his hermetic existence with a bloodshot-soul – very effectively. In the spirit of a **Winter’s Bone **or Martha Marcy May Marlene, Dwight’s past is gradually revealed as the quest to pay back an unnamed crime takes shape.

“This is a guy who is totally out of his depth,” says Blair of the character. “At the outset Dwight is scared, hesitant, regretful and devoid of toughness. I did not have to try hard to locate the emotional reality of that. Over the course of the film, he transforms into something else entirely.”

See for yourself when Blue Ruin arrives in UK cinemas on May 2.
