In this week's** Empire Podcast**special, the man behind the much-loved cult classic sitcom Arrested Development, Mitch Hurwitz, took the time to talk about the making of the show's recent resurrection, as well as what to expect from the potential follow-up, a.k.a. The Arrested Development Movie.
The idea of an Arrested Development movie has circled the internet since the show was still on the air, but it's only since Netflix brought back the Bluths that it seemed like a genuine possibility. Below is what Hurwitz had to say about it all, including a hint at Running Wilde star Peter Serafinowicz's possible appearance in the film...
“I’ve saved Peter Serafinowicz’s part for the movie. I love Peter because he’s just so funny. The film isn’t definite because it’s not my decision to [make it happen]. It would be like me saying, ‘I’m definitely going to make a James Bond sequel.’ I may want to, but other people get to weigh in on that…
“I definitely have a plan, in my own brain, and I know the cast is game, and I think Netflix would probably be game to do it. But Fox owns it, so it’s their call. But hopefully they’ll decide to do it… and you’ll notice I’m not making a joke at their expense now. That’s why.
“I’ve definitely plotted the macro things, but so much of it you discover not only in the writing, but once you’re on the set. This last series, I had plotted it all out so extensively, and yet every day I would get on the set and go, ‘Wait, wait! I forgot to go wrap this up. Let’s go do this scene.’ So yeah, we have a lot of the stuff planned – but also I don’t have a lot of the stuff planned, so there’s a lot I have yet to discover.
“One of the reasons I want to do a movie next is because we’ve got to have all the characters together. By the nature of the story, and by the fact that the actors have other gigs, we had to do this separated anthology idea, but from here on in, the family comes together, and that really was always the idea, that there’s this murder that takes place, there’s a trial, and the family who’s just said ‘The hell with you!’ to everybody has got to come back together – even though the joke of the series has always been Michael has to come back… now he’s got to come back.”
