Darren Aronofsky, he of the impossible to spell name and films laden with meaning and symbolism, is in talks to get all meaningful and symbolic with Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg in The Fighter.

The acting pair will get to brush of their elongated Boston vowels from The Departed, to play boxer "Irish" Micky Ward, who punches his way to a world lightweight title with the help of his once destitute brother Dicky, who trains him. There's no confirmation of who will play who, but we'd imagine it more likely that Damon will play Irish, as he's far too wholesome to have ever been destitute.

Wahlberg and Damon are waiting to see a rewrite of the script Paul Attanasio before they sign on. But if they put pen to parchment, the film could begin shooting as early as summer in Massachusetts.
