The Florida Project

With Tangerine, director Sean Baker broke through in a big way, his shot-on-iPhone slice-of-LA-life drama winning numerous awards. And his follow-up, The Florida Project, seems to be on a similar trajectory after debuting at Cannes to positive reviews. The first trailer for the film is online and you can watch it below.

The film is set on a stretch of highway outside Disney World, where a budget motel known as The Magic Castle squats unceremoniously. There, six-year-old Moonee (Brooklynn Prince, in the sort of exciting newcomer role Baker has become known for finding) spends her days with her best friend Jancey and lives a life that, while it may not be perfect, is fun and involving.

With her rebellious mother Halley (Bria Vinaite) doing her best to raise her, Moonee also has an unexpected friend in Bobby (Willem Dafoe), who does his best to help out, even as Halley explores more dangerous possibilities to provide for her.

The Florida Project will be out in the US on 6 October before heading to the UK on 12 January next year.
