Jake Johnson

He was an entertaining part of Jurassic World, and now it looks like Jake Johnson will be sticking around Universal's big franchises. He's joined the cast of the studio's new version of The Mummy.

Alex Kurtzman is directing the film, which is planned as the launch point for the studio's new linked monster cinematic universe (the MCU, if those initials weren't kind of being used elsewhere). Sofia Boutella is playing the creature in a modern-day story that will see Tom Cruise's special forces soldier, or possibly an ex-soldier, discovering the new creature. Annabelle Wallis is in talks to be a scientist.

Johnson, in a role The Hollywood Reporter has heard that was specifically written for him, will be another military man. So a different type of character than we usually see him in, though probably still with some outlet for his comedy chops.

The cameras should be rolling next month, with Kurtzman working from Jon Spaihts' script. As for Johnson, he's still appearing weekly on US TV as part of the cast of New Girl and was in indie comedy Joshy, which premiered at this year's Sundance Film Festival.
