As Tom Cruise keeps the engines lit about the possibility of the long-idling Top Gun sequel finally jumpin' off the deck and shovin' into overdrive, word arrives via Variety that Cruise's Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski is the frontrunner to make the new movie.

While the trade mag clarifies that Kosinski has yet to receive an official offer for the job, Cruise has been meeting with various potential directors, with the aim of having the Top gun sequel ready to fly into production once he finishes work on Mission: Impossible 6. And Kosinski apparently pitched a vision for the movie that caught the star's imagination.

Justin Marks was the writer most recently linked to the film, which reportedly explores drone technology and the end of the dogfighting era that the original Top Gun brought to life so vividly. Cruise's latest comments about the project's likelihood can be watched in the video below from Australian TV morning show Sunrise.

Cruise returns in The Mummy on 9 June, while Kosinski's next film to see screens is firefighting drama Granite Mountain, out later this year.
