Matthew McConaughey, Idris Elba, Tom Taylor, Abbey Lee and Jackie Earle Haley have already been announced, and the latest to join the extensive cast of Stephen King adaptation The Dark Tower is Fran Kranz.
King's sprawling eight-novel saga charts gunslinger Roland Deschain (Elba) and protégé Jake Chambers' (Taylor) quest to locate the titular tower, a central point in the universe, before dark forces (including McConaughey's villain Walter Padick, AKA Randall Flagg) invade and destroy it, wiping out reality.
Kranz will play Pimli Prentiss, transported to the world of The Dark Tower from our own to be a henchman for the evil Crimson King. If the name's unfamiliar, he's a favourite of Joss Whedon, with credits in Cabin In The Woods, Much Ado About Nothing and Dollhouse.
Nikolaj Arcel is directing the film, which previously had J.J. Abrams and Ron Howard in the chair (Howard is now producing). The adaptation has been in various stages of development for nearly ten years, and brave is the production team attempting to corral King's parallel universes, skipping timelines and characters drawn heavily from King's other novels... including, at one point, King himself.
The screenplay is currently credited to now fewer than four writers: Anders Thomas Jensen, Jeff Pinkner, Akiva Goldsman and Arcel. The Dark Tower currently has a UK release date of February 17, 2017. But that would seem to be a tight deadline at this point...
