After bringing us heartbreak, pain and suffering in Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond The Pines, you might think Derek Cianfrance would plump for a romantic comedy just to change gears. Not so! His latest is romantic and potentially tragic tale The Light Between Oceans, which has just pushed its first trailer out for us to see{ =nofollow}.

Adapted from M.L. Stedman's bestseller, Light finds Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander as Tom and Isabel Sherborne, who run a lighthouse on a remote Australian island in the years following World War I. Their life is happy and settled, and think they might have found the perfect addition when they discover a boat washed ashore with a dead man and a baby. Rescuing and adopting the infant as their own, they enjoy some delighted years with their daughter until they learn some sorrowful new information.

Yes, one of them is a powerful mutant that can control metal and the other is an android, which makes for a really difficult time whe... Sorry, we're being told that's not true. They actually meet the grieving Hannah Roennfeldt (Rachel Weisz) who, it transpires, lost a husband and daughter at sea. The girl would be about the same age as Tom and Isabel's...

That cast and director combination should provide something special for the story, but we'll have to wait and see when the film arrives later this year.
