Just as with studios, filmmakers are no strangers to finding movies from other countries and deciding that what they really want to do is make their own interpretation. Jodie Foster is hopping on the remake bandwagon, locking in a deal to direct, star and co-produce a new take on Iceland's Woman At War.
The original, directed by Benedikt Erlingsson is known as Kona fer I strid in its native land and is Iceland's entry as foreign language film in next year's Oscars. Foster would take on the role of Halla, as played by Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir. She's a genial middle-aged music teacher hiding a secret life as an outlaw environmental activist with a grudge against the local aluminum industry that is despoiling the pristine Highlands of Iceland. Halla is escalating her one-woman campaign of sabotage when an unexpected letter arrives with news: her adoption application has been approved and a baby girl is awaiting her in the Ukraine...
"This movie thrilled me beyond words," Foster tells Deadline. "I am so excited to helm a new American imagining of this relevant, beautiful, inspiring story. The character of Halla is a warrior for the planet, a strong woman who risks it all to do the right thing. But not without some serious mishaps along the way."
Foster last stepped behind cine-cameras to make Money Monster. She's got several other projects in development, but it sounds like Woman At War will be her next movie.
