Luther

Loooooooofaaaaaaaaaaaah! Yes, that ridiculously drawn out exclamation can only mean one thing. Well, two if you accidentally drop the loofah in the bath. But this time, it means that Idris Elba and his coat are coming back for another series of Luther.

Last seen on our screens in 2015, after which there was mostly talk of Elba and creator/writer Neil Cross moving the character to the big screen, the hard-nosed, hard-bitten and hard-hitting detective is returning for a new, four-episode season of the show.

"It's a question Idris and I get asked a lot. What happened to John Luther after we last saw him striding unbowed through the streets of his city, his blood red London?" Cross says in a statement. "It can't be over, can it? There's so much we don't know. So much unfinished business. The thing is, we've been asking ourselves the same question. In the end, we picked up the phone to some old friends and asked if they'd like to find out what happens next. It turns out, they would. So that's what we're going to do. We're going to find out what happens next."

And Elba seems ready too: "Neil, the BBC and I have been talking about a further season and I am thrilled that we have been able to bring it all together. I look forward to putting the coat back on."

Despite chatter about a potential American version of the show, that idea appears stuck in limbo. But we all know the original is still the best, and with BBC America also backing the new series, the current plan is to film the episodes early next year for broadcast at some unspecified future date.
