You might not think that the world necessarily needs a new take on – or one "inspired by" – 1993 Walter Matthau/Jack Lemmon comedy Grumpy Old Men, but Eddie Murphy and director/producer Tim Story disagree. They're developing just such a movie for New Line.
With John Davis, who produced the original and its 1995 sequel Grumpier Old Men also on board, the trio are figuring out a new version of the comedy, which saw Matthau and Lemmon as feuding neighbours who have had beef since childhood competing when they both fall for the same new arrival (Ann-Margret in the original).
Murphy is on to star as one of the bickering pair, but no one has been cast opposite him yet. According to Deadline, Samuel L. Jackson's name has been brought up as a possibility, especially since he just worked with Story on the new Shaft.
And this isn't the first time Murphy has mined older movies and TV for inspiration – he helped turn The Nutty Professor into a franchise and while I spy didn't reach such heights, it has its fans.
Next up for Murphy is recently-wrapped biopic Dolemite Is My Name, while Story's generation-spanning take on Shaft will be out next year.
