Normally found bringing the offbeat Schmidt to life on TV's New Girl, Max Greenfield is heading into more dramatic waters for a new role. He's in talks to co-star with Brie Larson in The Glass Castle.

Short Term 12's Destin Daniel Cretton is in the director's chair for this one, adapting Jeanette Walls' memoir. It'll chronicle how Walls' parents, Rex and Rose Mary Walls, were free spirits who lead a nomadic existence. Her mother was more concerned with painting and writing than, say, making dinner for her four kids, while her father could be inspiring and educational, but only when sober. The parents crumbled as their money ran low, and Jeanette and her siblings ended up more-or-less raising themselves. Walls herself (Larson in the film) went on to be a successful woman whose life was impacted when Rex and Rose Mary moved to New York to be near her.

Naomi Watts and Woody Harrelson are set as the parents, and Greenfield is joining as Walls' loyal but disaffected husband, a former rich kid who tries to help his wife deal with the arrival of her chaotic parents. With Cretton and Andrew Lanham on script duty, the film will start shooting in June.

Greenfield has been winning praise for his role opposite Sally Field in indie comedy drama Hello, My Name Is Doris, and he's also a producer on upcoming comedy Fist Fight. He voices Roger, one of the new characters to show up in Ice Age: Collision Course, due here on July 15.
