Benedict Cumberbatch may be flitting across astral planes on UK cinema screens right now in Doctor Strange, but the first day of next year will see him back in less psychedelic territory (well, probably) for the new series of Sherlock. The latest episode of the show will kick off, as has become tradition, on 1 January.

As the tweet from the show's official twitter feed specifies, series 4 launches with The Six Thatchers, followed by The Lying Detective and one that has yet to be named, though there might be a clue in the hint dropped by Team Sherlock at the San Diego Comic-Con this year.

Creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have said that this will be the darkest season yet, and it'll feature Toby Jones as one of the big villains. Oh, and there are rumblings that this might be the final run, partly due to Cumberbatch and co-star Martin Freeman's hectic schedules, but we'll have to wait and see whether the final episode of this latest runs ends with the world blowing up or anything as final.

So yes... Sherlock is ready to settle back into its regular spot. The most recent trailer is below.
