She won't be joining the gritty Defenders New York of Marvel's Netflix shows - we can only imagine! - but offbeat heroine Squirrel Girl is nevertheless heading to the small screen. She'll feature in Marvel's developing new animated comedy series New Warriors, which is being touted as a "Junior Avengers".

Created in the early '90s by Marvel comics legends Will Murray and Steve Ditko, Squirrel Girl is the alter ego of Doreen Green. Her first appearance saw her teaming up with Iron Man to defeat Doctor Doom. In later years, as penned by Brian Michael Bendis, she's the nanny to the daughter of Jessica Jones and Luke Cage. Her powers, as you might expect, are all squirrel based. She can chew through wood, leap long distances (such as, for example, from bough to bough), and speak squirrel. Surprisingly these are all useful in fighting crime, as are the regular army of sciurus carolinensis that help her out.

In the comics, her team allegiance is to The Great Lakes Avengers. Pitching her in amongst the New Warriors means she could potentially appear on screen alongside the likes of Firestar, Speedball, Scarlet Spider and Darkhawk. But no other colleagues have yet been revealed. Anna Kendrick has joked about being interested in playing her previously (with Winter Soldier/Civil War directors The Russo Brothers enthusing that she'd be perfect casting). Enlisting her for voice duties would be a fun touch, but there's no talk of it yet...

Marvel is scheming the half-hour New Warriors format in cahoots with ABC. They're currently looking for cable and streaming deals.
