Original Title:

Uptown Girls

Spoilt little rich girls who hit hard times — don’t ya just love ’em? No? Well, slap a restriction order on yourself and don’t come within ten paces of this hideous concoction.

When ‘It’ girl Molly (Murphy) discovers that her accountant has run off with her inheritance, she is reduced to nannying uptight eight year-old Ray (Fanning). Ah, but such despair is really the route to becoming a much nicer and less superficial person.

The usually dependable Murphy turns in an awkward and charmless performance, helped in no way by director Yakin’s inability to pull us willingly into this world or make us believe there’s any chemistry between Molly and her rock star wannabe boyfriend (Spencer).

As the hyper-intelligent, bossy brat, Fanning seems to confuse the word ‘precocious’ with ‘obnoxious’. You’ll find more substance in the Billy Joel music promo that (almost) shares the same name.
