Star Wars: The Force Awakens' BB-8 might have been the droid that everyone was looking for, but a newcomer on the scene might have them running for their lives. Or at least trying to kick the little meanie like a football. Because The Last Jedi will introduce his First Order counterpart, BB-9E.

An Astromech unit like his – we want to say "cousin", but we suppose it could be "brother" – BB-9E isn't exactly an evil twin to BB-8, given that he has some stark differences. There's his squarer domed head and that baleful, HAL-like red eye.

Toy company Sphero, which introduced the play gadget version of the droid for this year's Force Friday toy launch event (kicking off in Australia, hence the timing), describes the new ball-buster as a "rolling menace", and he certainly looks like something found hanging around with Kylo Ren. He's the emo BB-8. BB-hate?

Fortunately for the resistance, Sphero is also introducing a droid toy based on Star Wars most famous mechanized star: R2D2. You can find him whistling, beeping and rolling around in the video above.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be out on 15 December.
