Disney went on a release date news binge on Tuesday, and has offered up the details on a host of new films. By far the biggest announcement was that Star Wars: Episode IX, set to be directed by Colin Trevorrow, will be out on 24 May, 2019.
That's a somewhat surprising change from the December releases for The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, but moves the film back more in line with the original and prequel trilogies, which all released their movies in the summer. Little else is known about the movie, other than its director and the fact it'll carry the story of Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Poe (Oscar Isaac), BB-8 (himself) and the others over from the previous two films.
Other big titles seemingly now confirmed by the Mouse House include the next Indiana Jones outing, which has shifted a year to 2020, Jon Favreau's new version of The Lion King (July 2019), Frozen 2 (which confirmed its title and will still arrive in 2019), and several untitled Marvel, Disney Feature Animation and Pixar releases. One intriguing note is that Disney Animation's Gigantic (a spin on Jack And The Beanstalk) has been pushed back from 2018 until 2020, while Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 is shifting to later in 2018.
At this point, it's apropos to note that many of the release dates will be different in the UK. The Star Wars films have thus far been roughly day and date (sometimes a day early here), but most Marvel movies, for example, come out in the UK before the States, while we're often left waiting for the animated releases.
